Re: Couple not guilty in abortion trial.

This was also the opinion of many people in my country. There was a great deal of support for this young couple, and this was an important decision by the court.

The drug RU486 has been banned in Australia because it was believed that it causes harm to the woman taking it. This was simply a sneaky way of banning this drug because of pressure from religious groups. The health minister at the time this drug was banned, Tony Abbot, is a strict catholic, and used his position in the then government, to force his beliefs on others.

The court has said, that this drug did not harm the woman at all, and this is why the couple were acquitted.

An interesting aside to this was, that Tony Abbot ran as leader of the conservative party, in the last election. He lost that election, and one of the reasons that he lost, was because people feared that he would allow his religion to dictate policy, which would then become law.

Australia is a secular country, and most people want it to stay that way. This court case is a win for women, and people who don't want religious beliefs to be forced on others.
