This last line sums it up...
"Without the interference of religion and religious people, it would remain an issue for the individual woman only."

It takes society to even have an issue with this in the first place and thus societal interference as a result of people wanting to control others.

Society has some benefits but it has man,many restrictions on freedoms when coming from a place where awareness is lacking and dogmas are flown. Influence and control still wilds its ugly head.

Sometimes a remote island seems like such a nice option.
