Good Calories Bad Calories
I wanted to post this on the forum because I'm in the middle of this book and I think it has worth. It's all about fat.
The author, Gary Taubes is a award winning
Science writer. His forte is exposing studies and trials that the medical establishment is trying to shove down our throats, but actually don't have any worth....(gee surprise).
Gary has taken on the diet industry. The US food pyramid is based on skewed findings by a Dr. Ancel Key's who set out to prove that cholesterol was linked to heart disease. Never happened, not even close. But his alliance with the fledgling American Heart Association, who was looking for a boogeyman, supported Keys hypothesis, even though it was not based in fact. Key's hypothesis is that fat causes high cholesterol and heart disease....uh nope.
Time after time, trial after trial, proves that refined foods (sugar and flour in particular) are actually this countries cause for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Every processed food contains corn syrup.
This book is a very hard read. A lot of technical info about how medical investigations are set up, and a lot of biology. The chapters on insulin and glucose is very interesting, the demonization of salt, and the proponents of high fiber trying desperately to support the food pyramid, which by the way is US Policy, put into policy by McGovern.
After you read this book, if you are on cholesterol meds, you might just throw them in the garbage. Not that there are many at CZ on meds!!
I have been amazed at the information this book exposes. Even though Taubes is well respected and published, his story borders on the worst dietary
Conspiracy ever perpetuated on a civilization. It's simply a matter of "follow the money"....as most of us fully know here.
I have completely cut
Sugar and all but small amounts of complex carbs out of my diet. I've just shed 35
pounds in about 3 months eating fats and small amounts of complex carbs. Some of my long time illnesses have vanished. I no longer have brain fog. I'm actually quite shocked as I always thought fat was the killer and grains were the holy grail.
I guess you need to read about a tribe that for generations ate nothing but coconuts and fish. That was it. No disease at all. Until half their population was moved to mainland Australia. Rapid onset of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer.
Now I know some here are vegan, vegetarian, frutarian, etc. While this book might be annoying for those that don't have a lot of fats in their diets, it's still a very very good read. It's an eye opener...Literally one of the most important books I've personally ever read.
