Re: Some good information on religious fundamentalism

If the bible is supposed to be the word of god, and perfect and true, then why are there so many inconsistancies and contradictions?

This is a question that I have asked myself, as well as many others.

My own opinion is that the inconsistancies and contradictions are perfectly understandable if the bible is a work of fiction created by man, to try and explain the unknown, at a time in history where there was limited scientific knowledge. This is why I personally understand why the god of the bible is very much a character that has the human traits and emotions portrayed in the bible story. The authors of the bible wrote of a character that resembles what they knew, the character that most resembled themselves, or the selves that they would like to be. The bible, and other religious books such as the qoran, the book of mormon, hindu veda's, and many others, also reflect the society in which the authors of the books lived.

This is why we see the contradictions such as the god character in the bible giving a commandment such as "thou shalt not kill" (there are no conditions attached to this commandment), and then in further chapters, this same god character sanctioning killing.
