Re: Prisoners fed high soy diet ; develop serious health problems
And again why are people only focusing on soy when isoflavones and flavonoids that have the same effects, are found in every plant we eat?
In addition the studies leave out some important facts such as the goitrogenic activity of soy is inactivated by fermentation or cooking. Using raw, unfermented soy extracts is an easy way to manipulate the studies. Also keep in mind that studies have shown that the intake of iodine counter any goitrogenic effects of soy. Have you considered that maybe this is why the traditional Asian diet, which is high in soy, is also high in seaweeds that provide a lot of iodine? It is all part of balance in the diet. If we ate a single thing of any grain, or just beef, or just milk we will have health problems. This is another example of how easy it is to manipulate studies since they fail to take in to account balancing compounds in the plant themselves or from diet. As an example to the comment about balancing compounds in plants if I wanted to prove alfalfa could cause uncontrolled hemorrhage I could isolate the coumarins in the alfalfa and inject high levels in to an animal. But the fact is that alfalfa will not cause hemorrhage since the coumarins are balanced with vitamin K.
If something in such small quantities as 30g (soy) causes of thyroid disorders is already in my opinion is not halo
I have listed both phytoestrogen (isoflavone) and goitrogenic food sources in these posts. How many of these do you go out of your way to avoid because they have the same properties as soy?:
