Doctors usually aren't much help with anything they weren't trained for. Doctors were trained to dispense drugs for most common diseases and to keep making money doing so. They are scared to actually "investigate" and be sued for a wrong diagnosis of something they are not familiar with because their malpractice insurance might not cover their misdiagnosis. They also don't really have time to spend more than twenty minutes with each patient because they have to keep making money. So, it's best not to rely on them unless absolutely necessary (if they find out you have health insurance, you become a goldmine to them).
I have no medical training whatsoever, but your description sounds severe and probably easily distinguishable as "ichythosis" (doctors have identified more than 25 types).
I couldn't find much at youtube on adult ichythosis...
Certain CLAYS" have miraculous effects on the skin. When you shower, the best that will happen is that you wash off the top layer of skin, but when you take a bath, moisturizers and other nutrients can soak in to your skin (also check if any transdermal patches could help).
"Magnetic clay baths" could help by pulling toxins out of your skin...
