Of course there's a hormonal aspect to this. BCPs will shift your hormonal balance, often quite dramatically and will minimize the effects of the limited testosterone you have. Testosterone is what gives you the drive for sex and that's why men tend to have a higher sex drive. Women who have unusually high testosterone levels almost always have a very high sex drive.
