Originally, I wrote a long answer to this post. Then I saw your second post and realized in light of that, what I wrote is now irrelevant. So--just do what the late Ann Landers used to say to those in similar situations such as yours--ask yourself, are you better off with him or without him.
Also, you mentioned that things have been neglected regarding house maintenance. Why does that have to be his job alone? Why can't you call repair people to come in and fix things? Sometimes you just have to take the bull by the horns.
