Re: electrolytes

Bling,
electrolyte levels were not a concern with fasting for the first 150 to 200 years of Natural Hygiene: so (suddenly) why now?

The quality & nutritional value of a natural diet is mostly determined by the soil the food is grown in. In Dr Sheltons time, and before him, soils were considered to be very nutritious, with a multitude of minerals and other nutritional elements in abundance.
This is just not true today. Over eons of time, crops have extracted the nutritional elements from the soil, but, unless these are replaced, (which they are not) the soils no longer contain them. This means that most raw fruit and veg' are now deficient in these life-giving elements, which in turn means that we are too: nutrient-deficient soils, also means nutrient-deficient bodies.
This results in todays concern for low or deficient electrolytes while fasting.

Electrolytes are basically "salts" that conduct electricity and are found in the body fluid, tissue, and blood. Best examples are chloride, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Proper balance is supposed to be essential for muscle coordination, heart function, fluid absorption and excretion, nerve function, and concentration.

Natures way of replenishing minerals (and therefore electrolytes) was by flooding. The glacial mountains would melt in the summer months, where natural rivers would burst their banks, flooding the valleys and soils below with their life-giving elements: this in turn would mean that subsequent crops grown in those soils would take up these abundant inorganic minerals and form them into bio-available and organic minerals for the benefit of the body.
Unfortunately, this has largely been prevented by man-made dams, which prevents this natural cycle from occurring. Result? Deficient soils, and therefore deficient bodies which feed on these crops.

In addition, modern electrolyte drinks or sports drinks on the market contain so-called electrolytes of "sodium chloride" and "Potassium Chloride"; these are essentially inorganic poisons, and ARE NOT utilized by the body in any way shape or form, but are stored as such within the body-cells to cause problems later in life.
I shall give you just ONE example.............
The food giants will include only salty (sodium chloride) foods within their Public Houses (at the bar) where they serve alcoholic & soft drinks. The reason for this is because the consumption of salty foods such as crisps and salted peanuts will make you thirsty, making you drink MORE of their produce, which in turn increases the profits of these breweries.
Why do these salty foods containing sodium chloride make you thirsty?
Because the body recognizes them as poisons, which the body then tries to expel with an increased fluid intake by creating thirst.
Food giants are not backward at coming forward.

A famous British athlete of the 70's and 80's was a man called David Hemery. He performed at the Olympic Games and won a medal of sorts; however, to prevent electrolyte deficiencies he took several salt tablets a few hours before his competitive races; he was either physically sick prior to, or after each race, with severe vomiting and resultant dehydration. He suspected the reason, and stopped taking the salt tablets by going against his Doctors advice. This improved his performances enormously.

Paul Bragg challenged much younger athletes than he, to a race through the mountains in Colorado (I think), which he won. They consumed salt tablets prior to the race. He didn't. They were amazed.

Just so long as the diet of anyone who is contemplating a fast, of ANY length, (especially a long one) need have no fear of an electrolyte imbalance or deficiency if their pre-fast diet is more than adequate. This though can only be achieved by concentrated and organic supplementation with specialist supplements such as ENIVAS VIBE and similar extremely good quality products.

Personally, in all my years as a health researcher, I wouldn't even contemplate an extended fast in this day age, unless I knew my pre-fast diet was more than adequate. This (in my own view and experience) can only be achieved with quality 100% organic foods & organic supplementation which would prevent any kind of electrolyte deficiency from occurring.
