Try a combination of the amino acids l-lysine and l-arginine. It acts just like a benzo but without the nasty side effects, it literally changed my life and has allowed me to get my copper level to the lowest point it has ever been. I wrote a post on this a couple of months ago if you want to take a look
Lysine and arginine are antagonistic to each other. For example, the reason some people take lysine for herpes outbreaks is because it antagonizes arginine. Arginine activates the herpes viruses. Therefore, by antagonizing the arginine the lysine can put the herpes viruses back in to remission.
If you want something to calm the central nervous system then in my opinion the amino acid glycine is a great choice. Glycine is the smallest of the amino acids and is readily absorbed. It increases levels of the neurotransmitter regulator GABA that calms us. Anti-anxiety drugs and alcohol work on the same principle or simply increase GABA activity.
Since amino acids compete for absorption they are best taken on an empty stomach. Therefore, I recommend taking the glycine at least 30 minutes before meals. A gram (1,000mg) is usually sufficient.
Hveragerthi Im a bit confused, what is your point about l-lysine and l-arginine? Yes they do antagonize each other and as research is very limited in this combos anti-anxiety effects, more research is required in order to accurately determine why it exerts such benzo-like effects. Are you saying that because they antagonize each other that this disputes their therapeutic effects and that glycine should be used instead? Just curious
I have written on this same issue dealing with HGH secretagogues. They use arginine because it is supposed to stimulate HGH, which it will in extremely high amounts. But they know that the arginine can trigger herpes outbreaks so they add the lysine to antagonize it. This means people are paying a lot of money for something that is designed to have little to no effect.
Maybe the calming effect of this combination is only due to one of the amino acids, and not both. And the second is just to control side effects. I just looked and this appears to be the case:

"A small amount of arginine is converted to gamma-aminobutyric acid, a calming neurotransmitter."
On the other hand glycine is very effective in increasing GABA but does not activate viruses. And it does not require a second substance to prevent side effects. In fact, glycine is a wonderful healing agent being an important component of collagen and elastin.
