My daily Journey to a healthier life style

I know that trying to overcoming the urge to eat can be hard, especially when it is so easy to walk into the kitchen and grab something. I thought I would make a list of things that I do or have done in order to get over the “I want to eat, I HAVE to eat” urge during the crucial three day time when starting a Water fast.

I do realize that not all of these actions or ideas can work for everyone, since people have young children to care for and other family members that around while they are trying to do a water fast.

First thing I really try to do before my “start” date, is get rid of any “convenient” foods from my refrigerator or cabinets,( such as crackers, cheese, chips, cookies, etc -usually anything that can be easily eaten without having to really open it with a can opener or having to cook it) so that if I happen to be in my kitchen, I would really have to work hard to get something to eat

The Number One thing that helps over come any “eating” urges is COMMITMENT.

It know that it is hard, but commitment is the key. Ask yourself, how committed are you to having a successful Water fast? If one is fully committed, then it will be a little easier to overcome any urges, because your WANT to succeed will be just a bit stronger then your “want” to eat. It is very much like going to college. In my experience, I wanted to attend college so badly. I made that commitment. I worked three jobs (one full time, two part time) while going to college full time as well. It wasn't easy, but my commitment to accomplish what I desired was much stronger then my “want” to watch Saturday cartoons, or sleeping in, instead of going to class or doing my homework. I realized that all the inconvenient things like no Saturday sleep, late nights and lack of money was only temporary. I would be up working on some homework at 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday, when I knew my friends were probably out enjoying themselves at a club or having a drink of two. I wanted to be doing what they were doing! I would cry for a while, and then buckle down to doing my school work again. I had to remind myself constantly that a college degree was more permanent, then just a temporary thrill of hanging out with my friends or sleeping in. I wanted a college degree more. And just because I didn't have the money to do so, I worked hard. I worked a lot to over come my lack of money to financially pay for college. Water fasting is like that. It is a commitment to your permanent health, compared to your urge to satisfy your temporary urges. If you are really commitment to it, you will find a way to overcome any obstacle that comes your way, no matter what it is, it be Water Fasting or even something like obtaining a educational degree.

Just remember COMMITMENT is the helper of SUCCESS.

1. Camping out in bedroom.

I have usually done this when I am having a hard time overcoming my desire to sneak into the kitchen and see what type of food is there. I usually make it a special occasion by bring a nice selection of books, maybe a hand-held game, a couple DVD movies, a crafting project that I am currently trying to finish. Anything and everything that will keep me in my bedroom and away from my kitchen. Of course, I bring a good supply of water in my water bottle. I have been brought a couple bottles of water, to prevent me from, once again, cruising in the kitchen. I am sure this is very hard when you have a family, because you can't do this easily when you have children to watch or a husband to watch over. I guess it works for me, because I am alone.

2. Keeping my hands busy – i.e. Playing a hand held game, crocheting, knitting, etc.

I have noticed if I keep hands busy, then I am less likely to have more of a temptation to stick something in my mouth as food. I have also heard that this works when someone is trying to stop excess snacking.

3. Get out and doing things outside the house

I know that this isn't the best thing to do, if you have no will power to prevent yourself from stopping at a some fast food place, but if you are, then this might help depending how tied down a person is regarding family members. It has worked for me recently, as I keep myself busy window shopping, picking up small toiletry items, even loving on some puppies at Pet Land. It all prevents me from succumbing to temptations in my kitchen.

4. Reading a good book/watch a good movie

I know this seems to simple to be good, but if you are able to find a really good book or a movie, it will keep your mind occupied which is the first step of over coming an urge or feeling, no matter that that urge or feeling is. It is good to keep the mind occupied, so that you won't be focused on how your stomach is empty.

5 Tell Yourself “ I will Eat again”

When I did my first ever Water fast, it was very hard for me. I didn't prepare weeks ahead, like you are suppose to properly do. I kind of did it with a week's notice of what I wanted to do. During the first couple days of failure and finally getting past the first day. I started to tell myself regularly “ I will eat again” over and over again. I think it was for the benefit of my mental state, as I WAS hungry and like anyone that hasn't eaten in 24 hours, you get that “ I am starving” feeling. By telling myself that I was going to eat again, it helped me a bit to over come the hunger feelings that I was having.

6. Preoccupy Yourself

I know this sounds strange, but the more you do something to keep your mind busy, the least likely you are to be tempted to want to stroll into the kitchen and find something to eat. I have notice if I kind of plan my day full of things that will preoccupy me (kind of like making a To-Do-Active-list) it does help me. Take a shower/bath, paint your nails (which I did on Day 2 to keep myself busy. LOL), read the whole newspaper, play a video game, read a book, start a new craft, take a long walk, play with a pet,and anything and everything that will keep you busy and away from physical food.
