Was not able to workout at the gym today due to it being closed thanks to Hurricane Ike. Life in my part of town is back to normal, almost. Gas stations have gas and the grocery stores are stock. In the center, east and south part of town, 1.5 million still without light although water has been restored to a majority of the city. People are in those areas relying heavily on fema rations of ice, water and mre's. All school remain closed and will continue to be closed until Wednesday of this week. Some will remain closed indefinitely until electricity can be restored.
Experiences like this bring many things into perpective. Importance of family, friends and being prepared for life's curve balls. We tend to take for granted things we become accustomed to as the norm such as electricity, air conditioning, flushing toilets, stocked grocery stores and functioning gas stations. All in all, the people have reacted well. Neighbors have helped neighbors; crime is down, the leaders of our city have done a comendable job.
It is interesting to observe that whenever there is a natural disaster nearly anywhere in the world, the U.S. is there ready to lend support by sending supplies, humanitarian and disaster relief, but when something occurs here on a similar scale, little if any is done by other countries to aid those who have rendered aid in their time of need. Just an observation.
