Sunday, August 31, 2008, Day 30 of Journal, Day 5 of water fast
a.m. weight 194.8, total loss on water fast 7.6 pounds
what I ate:
1 drumstick, 3 pork ribs, beans, rice, potatoes, guacamole, 1 arepa, 4 brucetta on french bread.
Technically, this was a complete four day fast. Since I started at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, I didn't complete the first twenty-hours until Thursday at 6:00 p.m. So Sunday at 6:00 p.m. was 96 hours. I was happy to have reached 194 lbs. and I had all the intention of sticking to my fast until the 7-10 day mark, but we went to a neighbors party tonight and I felt I was being rude by not eating the food that had been prepared. In the latin culture, not eating when a guest in someone's home is one of the most disrespectfuly things one can do. It wasn't just any party
either. My neighbor's husband had returned from Iraq after being their the last 8 months and she was celebrating her victory in her battle against breast cancer. There was no way I was going to make them feel bad just so I could stick to my silly fast. I told my wife I could start another fast another. I felt good about my decision and did not feel guilty in any way about not reaching my short term goal.
In reading other people's blog, there seems to be many people who feel guilty about not sticking to their plan and really beat themselves up over it. Once they fail, they stop writing in their journal and disappear. I think what has been imporant at least for me is not giving up when I fail to reach my goals and not beating myself up for it when it happens.
My wife and worked out this afternoon. I did 45 minutes in the sauna and 15 minutes in the pool.
