You are being too harsh.  With all the recent sensitivity over words in the media lately, it would have been wise for the poster to state their gender.  When someone doesn't have all the details, they have to draw conclusions without it.  It seems awkward to ask, which is why no one did.  How would we know if the poster didn't want to cause a commotion by omitting info?
