Re: One more thing...

I have read the blood/brain anti-garlic theories. I believe that in that theory, onions are okay, just not garlic.

A group that avoids all things garlic/onion are the Jains, some sort of eastern religion. I'm not overly familiar with them and really all I know is that they avoid the garlic/onion family. P-r-e-t-t-y extreeeeme...

"Orthodox Hindus and Jainas, for instance, do not use garlic or onions in their cooking, much less have raw onions in their salad. Clearly, this prohibition has no relation to the taking of life, but every relation to the properties ascribed to various foods. Certain foods are ‘hot’, others are ‘cold’; foods are also categorized according to their supposed internal propensity to excite the passions. Whatever the medicinal properties of onions and garlic, these foods are believed to be base in some respects; more significantly, both onions and garlic give out strong smells, and it is argued, not unreasonably, that consumption of these items obfuscates the richer and softer tastes and smells associated with vegetables."

The wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jainism

Quoting from the wikipedia article:

"Jainism's stance on nonviolence goes much beyond vegetarianism. Jains refuse food obtained with unnecessary cruelty. Many are vegan due to the violence of modern dairy farms. The Jain diet excludes most root vegetables, as they believe this destroys entire plants unnecessarily. If you eat apples, you do not destroy whole trees, but for root vegetables, whole plants are uprooted. Garlic and onions are avoided as these are seen as creating passion, meaning anger, hatred, jealousy."

----------
I personally have heard nothing to make me consider avoiding any garlic or onions. I mean, maybe I wouldn't eat garlic if I were an airplane pilot or some such thing. I think the benefits outweight the potential problems.
