How odd, where did you speak to these farmers and ranchers? My brother who raised cattle for years always used molasses to give his stock their essential minerals. He tried a rock mineral block with magnesium to help prevent grass tettany, but the cattle wouldn't touch it. They wanted the molasses. My neighbor who still has cattle uses range cubes made with molasses. In this area acres of sorghum cane is grown, both for cattle feed and to boil down to a mineral rich syrup. Sorghum is produced by boiling down cane juice. However, blackstrap molasses is produced when Sugar cane is processed with calcium hydroxide to separate the minerals from the cane juice before it is refined into White Sugar .
The only time I ever saw calcium hydroxide used on the farm was to draw the fluid out of cucumbers to make crisp pickles and in the outhouse to absorb odors and keep away flies. Calcium hydroxide sucks the moisture right out of things, I prefer to stay hydrated and get my minerals in a way that they can be absorbed on a cellular level.
