Infantile Eczema .... Is it curable by medicines?

My son, now 2 year 10 months is suffering from a skin ailment, which doctors have diagnosed as "Atopic Dermatitis" alias "Infantile Eczema".

It started with small pale white patches on his knee and ankle joints and forehead, when he was 4 - 6 months old. The family physician recommended applying aloe Vera gel onto the patches. This reduced those symptoms temporarily. But as soon as we stopped the gel, it again reappeared.

Gradually, those patches were becoming more and more prominent, particularly the ones around the joints.

On August 15, 2005 he met with an accident and underwent a small surgery, which needed general anesthesia. After that, we had to keep him from bathing for about two weeks (until the stitches were removed). He was also administered with Antibiotics then. We noticed after this the patches became more severe, though local, and his tendency of itching aggravated. Then we decided to visit a dermatologist.

He prescribed a lot of medicines, like, steroidal ointments etc. This did not cure the symptoms although reduced marginally. He changed the medicines after the second visit, which was also not much effective. Rather, very rapidly, by a day or two, the patches spread throughout the legs, hands and face. There was swelling on his face too. This happened in the month of October.

After that we visited a renowned Homoeopathic Clinic (in December), who diagnosed this as Atopic Dermatitis or Infantile Eczema. He claimed that this is curable by homoeopathic medicine, but will take a 2 years treatment. However the condition will be better after 2 -3 months. 4 months have passed by but there has been no improve in the condition. Rather, the itching has increased pathetically. The kid cannot sleep throughout the night, and also most of the day time keeps itching. The itching is so severe that most of the time he ends up bruising himself.
Apart from the oral medicines, the doctor has prescribed petroleum jelly and olive oil to be applied on the skin, to keep it moist. Currently, the kid resists a lot to any oil or jelly.
We also, tried to find out the allergen by stopping different foods like, egg, meat, banana etc. But no result yet.
Sometimes, the rashes reduce for a day or two and then again flare up.

Is it really Atopic Dermatitis?
If it is that, is it curable by Homoeopathic medicines?
Can anyone tell us what the root cause of this is?
Can anyone direct us towards any effective treatment?
What are probable allergens for this and is there any way we could narrow down the list and hit the culprit?
