To survive fast you should start gradually, reducing the amount of food, type of food, number of days .So when you go on fast your stomach shrinked a bit already and doesn't scream at you. Your body thinks you are starving and switches on all possible signales.
The other thing to look at. If you are a religious person than you know every religion has fasting at least once a year and there is health consideration involved in this, not just some kind of punishment. It's easier after all to do it with positive thoughts.
