Bullied by doctor
My baby had his 9 month appointment yesterday. The doctor was a real piece of work. My child isn't vaccinated (and won't be) so the doctor decided to spend the whole appointment trying to bully me into giving him shots at this appointment.
First he treated me as if I was stupid for having any concerns about vaccinations. When I said he would not be getting shots at this visit he kept saying that he would be (didn't listen to me.) Then when that didn't work he treated me like I was a bad mother. Then he tried to scare me. He also said that they would treat my child different because he hadn't been vaccinated and that any fever was cause for worry (whereas their normal response to worried mothers of vaccinated babies is to tell them to give the baby tylenol and call back in 3 days. Can you believe that?! What about other diseases that start with a fever?!) Then he suggested that I might want to find a new doctor and implied that he would not treat my baby if he wasn't vaccinated. The doctor just kept hammering away at me. Meanwhile my baby was getting fussy and crying (due partly to it being close to nap time and partly to the tension in the air.) He would not finish the appointment so that I could take the baby home!
Finally I said I would do more research into it (just to shut him up) and he said to bring him in even walk in and they would give him shots. He also said something stupid like he should get the shots at the same time because they have only been studied when given together.
I could tell he was really mad that I hadn't given in to him. When he finished looking at my baby, he didn't want anything to do with him and cried when he looked into his ears and then he pretended to be "playful" but he did it roughly. I feel like he was rough with him on purpose!
Nobody deserves to be treated the way I was by that doctor! I am an intelligent parent who is only trying to do what is best for my child. I would be open to respectful debate on the issue and have nothing against talking about it with a doctor... however I can't believe he tried to bully me and I swear some of the things he said were either lies or outdated information.
(I since double checked some of what he said and it was a lie!
- He claimed that Wakefield had refuted some of his original MMR research which is a lie.)
