Re: Libertarians explained....
You are half correct. However there is more to Libertarianism than you have indicated (and that is the Libertarian dilemma)
The problem is that Libertarians are all over the map. There are conservatives like Heritage and Cato, and lefties like Noam Chomski and Gore Vidal, some that follow the writings of Ayn Rand and even some that are anarchistically inclined and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Emma Goldman. There is even a branch that are anarchistic-capitalists!
The reason Libertarianism will never be a real political force in America is that it has no cohesive center and unified philosophy, but is rather a lose collection of ideas from the left, right and beyond that all stress personal freedom and responsibly, free markets (not the current so called free trade BS) and less or no central government.
I am more of an anarchist than a run of the mill Libertarian, but that ideal is an unrealistic philosophy in this day and age, so as a realist I gravitate to some areas of libertarianism as the closest organized political philosophy that I can tolerate. However, my views are way beyond the normal right/and or left of Libertarian thought. I guess I would be a Spiritual Utopian Libertarian Anarchist, but there is no party of that description....
The Libertarian party says of itself:
QUOTE:
The Libertarian Party is committed to America's heritage of freedom:
* individual liberty and personal responsibility
* a free-market economy of abundance and prosperity
* a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade.
Libertarians believe in the American heritage of liberty, enterprise, and personal responsibility. Libertarians recognize the responsibility we all share to preserve this precious heritage for our children and grandchildren.
Free and Independent
Libertarians believe that being free and independent is a great way to live. We want a system which encourages all people to choose what they want from life; that lets them live, love, work, play, and dream their own way.
Caring For People
The Libertarian way is a caring, people-centered approach to politics. We believe each individual is unique. We want a system which respects the individual and encourages us to discover the best within ourselves and develop our full potential.
Principled; Consistent
The Libertarian way is a logically consistent approach to politics based on the moral principle of self-ownership. Each individual has the right to control his or her own body, action, speech, and property. Government's only role is to help individuals defend themselves from force and fraud.
Tolerant
The Libertarian Party is for all who don't want to push other people around and don't want to be pushed around themselves. Live and let live is the Libertarian way.
UNQUOTE
My personal philosophy on government is as follows:
...the idea that government rightly exists only to defend individual liberty and property, not to redistribute wealth, establish moral or religious codes of personal behavior, or act as an advocate for any individual or group of individuals. I believe that government should be limited to only those functions that enable people to live in peace with one another, and that there are certain areas of individual liberty that should be off-limits to government interference, majority vote or not. For in a society where every aspect of life is ultimately subject to a majority vote, there can be no such things as absolute liberties - only privileges subject to the whims of others.
Nice work if you can get it, huh?
