Most probiotics you buy have a mixture of single species bacteria that were raised in a monoculture, so the first thing they do when they get activated is they fight and compete with one another, reducing their efficiency. Since the effective microorganisms are raised in a consortium, they act as a group against the flora in your gut, converting them from app bad behaving bacteria into beneficial behaving.
