Re: miserable vulva

You are not alone. Our stories are similar. I thought i had a yeast infection, OBGYN kept treating me like it was a yeast infection and it never went away. I been to dermatologists and different OBGYN's....this is what i learned the past 2.5 years. Few physicians specialize in vulvar problems, and few medical schools provide much training in this field. If your primary care physician can't help, call the gynecology or dermatology department of the nearest teaching hospital and ask for a recommendation. There may be a vulvar clinic nearby — or a gynecologist or dermatologist with a particular interest in such problems or long experience in dealing with them.

I was lucky... I live in Saint Louis and there was a vulva specialist. The link is http://www.slu.edu/obstetrics-gynecology-and-womens-health-home/urogynecology...

I was diagnosed with lichen simplex chronicus on the vulva. Do not self diagnosed or get diagnosed over the internet. U need to see a doctor who specializes in skin conditions with the vulva! I can share with you what i was told to do to manage this chronic but treatable diagnoses.

-First follow the vulva guide lines everyday! Here is the link.http://www.slu.edu/obstetrics-gynecology-and-womens-health-home/urogynecology/guidelines-for-vulvar-skin-care#.Ual3FUC1GSo

I also use 7th generation toliet paper.
I go without underwear as much as possible at home and avoid chlorine pools, don't shave the private area and avoid any soaps coming into contact with the vulva. I wash my hair in the sink.

-Crisco! Yep, crisco from the store. They recommend to put crisco on my dry skin areas on the vulva for moisturizing my skin. Sounds gross, but it works! Put it in a nice container and carry it everywhere with u. Apply on the lichen simplex area's. Its safe and helps the dry skin get back to normal. I was told to do this everyday for the rest of my life to keep that sensitive area moisturized. Avoid vagisil and monastate creams, they have alcohol in them! I lived off vagisil and monastate cream for my itching which was a big no no! It caught up with me and eventually causes severe burning on my vulva! Caused all kinds of problem because of the alcohol in it.

-First i was on clobetasol steriod ointment (they advise against creams and suggest ointments) then as my skin improved moved to triamcinolone ointment, eventually getting down to using once a week...i have a follow up to check skin for monitoring...again crisco after steriod ointment everyday!

Sitz bath's help with itching and burning. Soak in a baking soda bath and place a bag of frozen peas or cold pack to help itching and burning.

I also got a qtip test to rule out vulvadynia and a specialist with vulva checked me out who specialises in this area.

The goal is to promote healthy vulvar skin. This is done by decreasing and/or removing any chemicals, moisture, or rubbing (friction).

I hope this helps ladies! Please find a specialist in vulva. The specialists at the Vulvar and Vaginal Disorders Specialty Center offers additional expertise to recommend a variety of therapies to cure or relieve symptoms.

God bless, keep searching and keep trusting in GOD!
