Gulping vs. Fletcherism

VERY interesting.

I have a confession: I am a gulper.

I was having a discussion with my sister, a while back. She was saying how, if she enjoys a food (let's say chocolate, for example, although it can be ANYTHING), she can take a small piece, put it in her mouth, and savor it for a long time.
To which I said, WHAT? That makes me crazy! To me, food tastes best in large oversized bites which I wolf down in rapid succession!

This is not to say that I do this all the time. On the whole, I'm probably an average chewer, masticating a medium a mount but not enough. I tried counting my chews at lunch today and I was ready to swallow at around 25 bites, which is at least 10 short of ideal.

Here's the thing, though... I eat more than my sister does, am shorter, yet am much thinner than she is. I'm not skinny, just pleasantly petite, but my sister is quite overweight, maybe 30 lbs? You would think it would be the opposite. Although there are of course many factors.

Based on this, it would seem like hypersalivation might not be such a bad thing! More saliva, more digestion, more alkalinizing. No?
