If you want a reliable measure of magnesium status, get a blood test of RBC (red blood cell) magnesium. This measures your tissue levels. Dr. William Davis from the Heart Scan Blog recommends >= 6.0 mg/dl, and says it can take months to get your level up. One reason might be that your body can steal magnesium from bone to keep serum levels within operational tolerance. Then when you're replacing magnesium again, excess that your serum doesn't need can go back into bone stores. (At least, that's what I've figured out so far to explain why it's taking me so long as well to build magnesium back up.)
