Even so Trick, both no.1 and no. 2 are amygdala-related. Scientists are just figuring out how the brain works.

I have this DVD done by PBS, called "This Emotional Life," and it says that the amygdala, or the fight vs. flight/anxiety portion of the brain, has a nice, fat freeway to communicate to the frontal lobe...which controls REASONING, PLANNING, EMOTIONS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING.

HOWEVER, the frontal lobe has nothing but "side streets and alleys," i.e. shitty roads, to get back to the amygdala, which would seem to say that it's hard for your brain, physically, to tell itself that the threat has passed and to stop overstimulation of the amygdala.
