Re: Anybody's hypo worse after eating wheat/dairy?
I just finished reading a very interesting book called "The hormone solution" by a doctor called Thierry Hertoghe (I ordered it from amazon.com). He is a hormone specialist treating many patients with thyroid disease, adrenal fatigue and other hormonal imbalances. I warmly recommend this book!!! Among other things, Dr. Hertoghe lists food that should be avoided by those with hormonal imbalances, be they related to thyroid, adrenal glands or other organs. Things to avoid are (this is not an exhaustive list): dairy products, wheat and grains (bread, pasta, pizza dough...). According to the author, this kind of food can cause various symptoms such as drowsiness, flatulence and weight gain. When it comes to dairy products, his theory is that milk is made for calves and not for humans, and therefore our bodies are not equipped to digest it properly!
On the other hand, he recommends that you eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and small amounts of beans and nuts. If you have a low thyroid, but no other hormonal deficiences, you should not eat too much protein (because that can impair T4 to T3 conversion), but instead make sure you eat enough of the right kind of carbs (brown rice, potatoes, fruit, vegetables..).
