I had something similar a couple of years ago, and it turned out to be directly related to my thyroid being underactive (hypothyroidism). I have corrected this condition through supplements and diet, and my voice is as good as ever.

Another thing to check, would be nodules on the vocal chords, sometimes this can cause a weakening in the voice, and also a lowering of the voice. It would be good to rule this out.
