Addiction could be repackaged as *desire*.
Need and want are two different things. The wanting\desire is the addiction.
Bigger house, newer car, latest electronic gadget, etc. And you are right... not only is the advertising and propaganda feeding us with nonsense confusing need and want... societal (social class) pressures are perhaps even more of an insidious influence.

The worst kind of discrimination is *class* discrimination which occurs overtly, and blatantly, by government and industry...
One rarely (never?) sees them building a toxic polluting industry, or even a gas station (here) in the middle of an upper class neighborhood. Dump the waste in the middle of a poor, or lower middle class neighborhood though, and few notice or protest.
