there is a cavitat machine that images these with sound.

there are also people who charge up to $10,000 for this testing and procedure.

I was told it is  like Sonar, and compares the difference in density of the jaw bone.

Dentist charged $1200.00 full mouth test, or $300 per quadrant. I only had one quadrant done as that was where I had a problem with pain, and clicking of the jaw when I chewed.

Also told that these jaw bone problems come about when a tooth is removed, and the dentist neglects to clean the socket of 3 ligaments that stabilize the tooth. They eventually rot, and become infected and eats away at the bone. The bone was like mush in the area of the Cavitation according to the dentist.
