Modern Science has dispelled many myths about skin disorders such as acne: including how chocolate causes pimples and that popping a zit will help it heal faster. But modern Science has also brought to light the causes of acne, as well as how to treat the ailment. Specifically, scientists have discovered the role between Acne & progesterone, a kind of hormone. In addition, it has been found that hormone therapy can be an effective cure for acne.

The interplay between Acne & progesterone has both physical and psychological dimensions. Imagine being menopausal, having anxiety attacks and hot flashes, and then having an acne problem, too; as if a woman did not have enough problems to deal with at that time, with hormonal changes wreaking havoc on her body and the depressing sight of acne further dampening her feelings as well. Acne & progesterone, then, can have both positive and negative correlations, depending on the circumstances surrounding each individual acne sufferer.

High progesterone levels in women also occur in the days before a menstrual period, and acne outbreaks tend to happen at this time. Hormone therapy is used to a certain extent by non-pregnant women at this time in the form of birth control pills. Progesterone in itself does not cause pimples, but it has a partly androgenic effect, and the androgen hormone plays a big role in the appearance of acne. This is one of the reasons why progesterone is negatively associated with pimples.

Strangely however, the natural progesterone cream used by many middle-aged women to treat menopausal symptoms is both praised and condemned by these individuals as hormone therapy items for treating acne. Some women claim that rubbing the cream on the skin removes their acne blemishes. Adult-onset acne that may be misdiagnosed as an allergy sometimes appears on the neck and cheeks; and the application of a progesterone cream may correct this. Conversely, other women say that using the cream actually aggravates their pimple problem.

Various progesterone cream brands are available online and over-the-counter in some countries. But before deciding to undertake any form of hormone therapy, a licensed physician should be consulted first to make sure it's the appropriate path to take. The relationship between acne & progesterone may not be that clear-cut, but it is doesn't have to be as complicated as it seems to be, either.
