Re: Why break a fast with fruit?

Hello chrisb1,

I have also read many of your posts with much interest and I especially admire your patience to answer the same questions time after time!

Unfortunately, I don't have much time to spend on Curezone these days, but I try to take a look now and then. In this case, I wanted to react because these are two things that I feel rather strongly about. Especially because most people that believe in the benefits of fasting are also big proponents of fruit, and I don't agree with that. Certainly in more northern climates, I believe that many people don't do well on even a rather limited amount of fruit. For example in Belgium, where I live, there's not that much fruit around most of the year. Fruits that grow here naturally, I mean.

Have you looked into the concept of metabolic typing? I find this very interesting, especially the fact that the same food can have a totally different effect depending on your metabolic type, because it follows a different metabolic pathway. This means that for a fast oxidizer or protein type like myself, eating a piece of meat has roughly speaking the same effect on my metabolism as eating a piece of fruit has on a slow oxidizer or carb type. There's also a strong link between metabolic type and the environment where you live or where your ancestors used to live. An eskimo is certain to be a protein type, as for most of history there were very little carbs around there. Someone in a warmer climate will do better with more carbs and fruit in his diet, because those are also much more available in his natural environment.

When I tried to be a fruitarian, I felt plenty of energy initially, but already after 3 or 4 weeks, this turned into a state of being "overly active", nervousness, elevated blood pressure and high tryglicerides. Too much fruit puts me into overdrive and this is especially the case after I have been fasting, as the state of fasting is rather similar to a situation where you get your energy mainly from proteins and fats (ketosis). I think that many people that are overweight have a problem with Sugar and carbs, and that for those people it would perhaps be better to break a fast with something else than fruit juice.

I read "Fit For Life" as a teenager by the way, which is how I first became interested in the link between food and health. In fact, with my current diet, I almost automatically follow the rules of food combining, as the carbs that I eat are mainly vegetables, so I don't mix proteins with starches. But I do believe that metabolic typing is a more trustworthy guideline than food combining.

All the best,

chava
