Re: Why Circumcise?
Thank you so much everyone for this insight into the circumcision issue. I am the partner of a circumcised man - there are no relevant religious reasons for it. I notice his lack of sensitivity in comparison with previous lovers, and how difficult he finds it to reach a level of stimulation through the penis that brings him to orgasm. He is not happy to discuss the subject. He is in his 30s and we have a close relationship of 3 years standing. When I think that this was a "standard medical procedure" he was subject to with neither he nor his parents having a choice, it makes me very angry.
On a separate note, I have been raised in a Western culture of sexual openness where circumcision is so uncommon as to be "weird". Among men, a circumcised man in the shower room would be the odd one out. In many years of very frank conversation with many many men, and frank discussion of sex with many many women, I have NEVER met anyone who described being shown how to care for their penis, nor have I met any men or women who knew men whose foreskin did not retract easily and on the whole stay that way. It IS a conversation I have had with men. As a sometime nursery and primary school teacher I notice that young boys of 5 ish are naturally curious about their penis, which often becomes semi-erect and almost the first thing young boys in the bath do when getting to know their bodies is retract their foreskin.
