Yeah, but many of the imprisoned are just drug addicts and criminals, and sometimes the two go hand in hand. Many of the drug laws are draconian - the perfect example were the blacks gettting sentenced to major time, even life, for crack/rock cocaine, while whites were getting probation for powder. The access to mind altering drugs during our "evolution" in my mind plays very little part, although I don't claim to be an expert. It sounds all fuzzy and warm and I bet there have been a thesis or two written about it at Harvard, but to me it just doesn't wash. The access just wasn't there, and early man had a lot more things to worry about. Like finding food and surviving.
