getting disturbed about what you have traditionally accepted as right... shakes the very foundation of your ego at its very roots... the walls of the fortress of the ego may start to crumble... if it keeps up, then, there's gonna have to be a showdown...
I would imagine that this showdown came for Christopher Caldwell at some point... and it it may have been that he wasn't ready and/or willing to let it go. He must have felt that the death of his own ego would be too much for him to take... As a consequence he ran fast as he could back to his fortress... to where he could feel safe and secure again. And then began to justify his not being ready by attacking his Master. I don't think this would be such an uncommon a thing to have happen.
