Re: oral short term prednizone -only thing that finally helped my severe exfoliative cheilitis
Hi Martin,
I saw my new dermatologist on Feb. 27th of this year who prescribed the prednizone and by the time I had a follow up visit in one month on March 27th, there was noticable improvement by the doctor and myself but I would say that it took another several weeks before the exfoliative cheilitis was more ''under control'' requiring less care, less excess skin, therefore less peeling.
So it has been about a month and a half since I have been off of the oral prednizone, having taken it for a total of 15 days, reducing the strength by half every 5 days
I still do have some peeling, the amount varies from day to day but compared to before with my lips literally totally encrusted with scabs , it is negligable and in pictures often not even noticable . For example, for whatever reason my lips today have some light white excess skin on them but through the day carefully moisturizing, it has gotten better, less noticable.
It seems for me that the prednizone allowed my lips to start the healing process. It seemed to take down the inflammation and in my case in turn lessened the amount of excess skin trying to grow to what i would imagine was my body's way of trying to repair all the damage from the years of exfoliating in an aggressive manner so that i could go out in public but again in my particular case worsened it more and more.
I do not know if this prednizone treatment would work for you or anyone else but it was the first treatment in 6 years that actually improved the conditon
Whether my lips will go back to the vicious endless cycle that exfoliative cheilitis involved for me remains to be seen
If I can remain on the path i am on now which is easily managing any slight extra skin that grows on my lips , I will be elated
I wish you all the best and everyone in this group
