I used to get them all the time until about 18 years ago. I've had them drained, lanced, marsupialized and catheterized on different occasions. Each time was a very, VERY painful emergency room experience. Finally, after refusing to go to the hospital the final time, I took Excedrin PM for the pain for about 3 days and took sitz baths every couple of hours in between sleeping. Finally, while sitting in the tub, it burst and drained on its own, never to return again. I still have a tiny, barely noticeable cyst where the last one was, but after dealing with it about twice a year for about 4 years, I leave it alone and it leaves me alone. I think that may have been what started it in the beginning as I went to the doctor to find out what the mysterious lump was. By the doctor poking and prodding it, later that night I ended up in the emergency room as it flared up and I was in EXCRUCIATING PAIN (far worse than childbirth in my opinion)! It happened regularly for years after that until the final time. I think had the doctor left it alone the first time (I understand it was my fault for getting him involved, but...)it would never have flared.
