Re: My symptom: can't feel emotions
I always hesitate to give people "advice" because I'm not a doctor and I know, from personal experience, just how serious adrenal fatigue/exhaustion can be. It has basically RUINED (and that is not too strong a word) my life and the lives of other people I know.
So..... MAKE SURE YOU TALK TO YOUR DOC AND DON'T PUT ANYTHING I SAY INTO PRACTICE BY YOURSELF.
But, having said that, at the same time, I've found that some of the best advice I've ever gotten has been from "regular" people.
So... I understand the fear of Cortef. It's nothing to screw around with. But the point of being on it is to give your adrenals enough "support" that they can actually rest and heal. 2.5 mgs. a day is not enough to do that. What your doc did by prescribing 20 mgs. is the "normal" (for docs who know what they are doing of course.... most docs don't even BELIEVE in adrenal fatigue) and 20 mgs. is usually completely safe. Your adrenals WILL "downregulate" and come to rely on the 20 mgs. But that is the very reason you are taking it.... to take some of the stress off your adrenals. And it's safe as long as you make sure you TAPER SLOWLY off of it when you and your doc decide to come off.
BUT..... the diabetes does change your situation..... and I can't claim to know in what ways. I do know though that (just like the electrolyte issue) cortisol helps to REGULATE blood
Sugar and has a LOT to do with your body's ability to use proteins, carbs and sugars in the right way. So I would THINK that if you have adrenal fatigue and are not producing enough cortisol, it would make things that much harder for you diabetes-wise. (And I also think you are right that it goes the other way.... diabetes can be really hard on the adrenals). So my guess is that a lot of your issues (blood
Sugar and edema for sure) would be helped by Cortef. I suspect you are on TOO SMALL a dose.
But like I said, this is really one you need to talk over with your doc so he can help you manage blood sugar/insulin doses if you increase your Cortef.... because I bet it will have an effect on them. Although you are probably pretty good at managing them yourself after dealing with it for 20 years!
Anyway, I'm really sorry for what you are going through and I hope you feel a lot better soon.
Talk to your doc as soon as possible. And if there is anything else I can do to help, let me know.
