Plastic chemicals 'feminise boys'

Chemicals in plastics alter the brains of baby boys, making them "more feminine", say US researchers.

Males exposed to high doses in the womb went on to be less likely to play with boys' toys like cars or to join in rough and tumble games, they found.

The University of Rochester team's latest work adds to concerns about the safety of phthalates, found in vinyl flooring and PVC shower curtains.

The findings are reported in the International Journal of Andrology.

Phthalates have the ability to disrupt hormones, and have been banned in toys in the EU for some years.

However, they are still widely used in many different household items, including plastic furniture and packaging.

There are many different types and some mimic the female hormone oestrogen.

This feminising capacity of phthalates makes them true 'gender benders'

The same researchers have already shown that this can mean boys are born with genital abnormalities.

Now they say certain phthalates also impact on the developing brain, by knocking out the action of the male hormone testosterone.

Dr Shanna Swan and her team tested urine samples from mothers over midway through pregnancy for traces of phthalates.

The women, who gave birth to 74 boys and 71 girls, were followed up when their children were aged four to seven and asked about the toys the youngsters played with and the games they enjoyed.

They found that two phthalates DEHP and DBP can affect play behaviour.

Boys exposed to high levels of these in the womb were less likely than other boys to play with cars, trains and guns or engage in "rougher" games like playfighting.

There are many different types and the most commonly used are deemed entirely safe by regulators
DEHP - used to make PVC soft and pliable and used in products like flooring
DBP - used as a plasticiser in glues, dyes and textiles

Elizabeth Salter-Green, director of the chemicals campaign group CHEM Trust, said the results were worrying.

"We now know that phthalates, to which we are all constantly exposed, are extremely worrying from a health perspective, leading to disruption of male reproduction health and, it appears, male behaviour too.

"This feminising capacity of phthalates makes them true 'gender benders'."

She acknowledged that the boys who have been studied were still young, but she said reduced masculine play at this age might lead to other feminised developments in later life.

But Tim Edgar, of the European Council for Plasticisers and Intermediates, said: "We need to get some scientific experts to look at this study in more detail before we can make a proper judgement."

He said there were many different phthalates in use and the study concerned two of the less commonly used types that were on the EU candidate list as potentially hazardous and needing authorisation for use.

DBP has been banned from use in cosmetics, such as nail varnish, since 2005 in the EU.

The British Plastics Federation said: "Chemical safety is of paramount importance to the plastics industry which has invested heavily in researching the substances it uses.

"Moreover, the new European Chemical Regulation, REACH, will ensure further rigorous evaluation and testing or chemical substances and their uses."

My relationship with my boyfriend has started to escalate in physical violence. He says it does not count as domestic violence since we're a same sex couple, and he says that trying to get any kind of help will be pointless. He's lashing out at me more often. He's hit me, threatened to hurt my dog, and most recently he choked me. I've thought about leaving, but the more I think about it the less of an option it seems at the moment. I'm 17 and currently unemployed, so I really couldn't afford a place of my own at the moment. Only a friend knows about my situation. My parents also aren't really an option either since they don't accept me and had wanted me to move out. After an incident in the past, I had went to stay at this friend's house temporarily, but my boyfriend freaked out and I feel it made things worse, so I'm afraid that things will be worse if I try and leave. He was never ever like this before, I hope that he can be the person he was before again. But I don't feel safe living with him. I don't know what's best to do at this point.

  Go home, get back into school, get some counseling, and take control of your own life so that you won't choose (or, be chosen by) another abuser.
  
  I stayed with an abuser for over 15 years, and then jumped right into another very, VERY toxic relationship that ended very badly (see blog "Coping With Betrayal"). I didn't have to live my life that way. I didn't know that there was a life that could be free of anxiety, self-doubt, self-loathing, and self-deprecation. But, there is a strong, healthy, balanced path. You just need to determine that you are absolutely worthy of living life, well. And, that means finding balance, calm, self-esteem, etc, not wealth or status.

Well, I was 16 when it happened. It was with my best friend's uncle. Early in 2002, Nate's parents divorced and he stayed with his father and moved to a house near mine. That summer, Nate's uncle Carl came visiting. He was around his 30's and, at first, I found him incredibly good looking. I just blushed and looked down. He got me a bottle of a drink that reminded me of kool-aid with vodka. We toasted and I emptied the bottle very quickly which made him laugh very hard and put a lascivious look on his face. I couldn't bare to look at him in the eye and he knew I was uncomfortable, so he gave me another bottle and asked me if I wanted to hang out by the pool. I said yes and we just sat outside and he started asking me about my life, my interests and stuff. I though it was weird and exciting at the same time, specially 'cos all the time, he had this almost dirty look on his face. The conversation went fine until the point he started asking me about girls... I said I didn't have much experience with them and he then asked about boys. At this point, I freaked out and blushed even more, looked the other way and stopped talking. He then, pushed my chair closer to his, held my face and said I should not worry, 'cos he knew what I wanted and he would take care of me. Before I knew it, he was kissing me and I could not resist it. He grabbed me and we went on kissing all the way into his bedroom. He tossed me on the bed and jumped on the top of me, and I could not believe that it was going to happen, for real, right there. I was so scared and nervous.. I had no idea of what to do and everything was happening so fast... He ripped my clothes off and went down on me. I started panting and all sorts of crazy things went through my head... and then, things got pretty odd and rough all of a sudden. He just stopped, got up, got a condom and lube out of a bag, sat on his knees, on the bed, and said that I was going to get what all faggs wanted. I got so shocked and scared by his remark that I just froze. He put on the condom, put lube all over it, bent over me, spread my legs apart, pushed them against my chest and slammed his penis inside me.
It was so painful that I just screamed out. I tried to push him away, but he pinned me down in away that I couldn't move. He told me to shut up 'cos he was giving me what I wanted and that I had to take it like a man. I told him it was hurting too much and begged him to stop, but he kept on going harder and I realized I was sobbing. When he finished, he got up and I saw the blood on his condom and he kinda smirked and said he had popped my cherry really fine. He went to take a shower and said that afterwards, I was going to get some more of that. As soon as I heard the water running, I got up, grabbed my clothes and ran downstairs, out to the backyard, where I got dressed. I ran home and was glad that my mom wasn't there. I went straight into the bathroom, feeling the worst pain I'd ever felt in my life, and was so afraid of being hurt really badly because I was bleeding a lot in the shower. After a while, the bleeding had decreased. I went to my room, put a towel in my underwear and went to bed. I kept having bleeds over the next 4 days and washed the bloody towels during the night to hide them from my mother. I was so distraught by the incident that I had symptoms of fever, nausea and weakness for several days, but of course, I refused to go seeing a doctor and convinced my mom it was the flu. Also, I was worried that Carl would come after me, so I did not leave the house for a couple of weeks. When Nate returned, he told me his uncle had shortened his visit and returned to Canada, just 2 days after the incident. A couple o months later, I told Nate what had happened, but never revealed who it was. I don't have to say that I got extremely traumatized by this event, and refused to have any kind of sexual activity until I was 20 years old, when I met my first boyfriend, Michael, who was kind and patient enough to understand and wait until I was ready. I'm 28 years old now, got a lovely boyfriend who makes me very happy and wants to marry me. I'm really glad that I was able to deal with my past and move on.

ok this is the situation. i met this girl at work. she would always come up to me and ask me if i wanted to take her out or to the movies. i would just play it off and say no because i always thought she was just playing around and i didnt have a car. when i told her that excuse she would offer to borrow someones car and pick me up.when i would say no i would completely blow her off and show no interest but she was still persistent.
this would go on for about a year. i finally get a car and one day i just said i would take her up since she seems like she likes me. so she approach me and ask me again we talk and she gives me her number. we start talking on the phone and she eventually invites me over to her house to talk and chill. one day i go over there, she gets in the car and we sit in front of her house and start talking. out of nowhere she comes out and tell me she is gay/bi.
that surprises me because there are no signs of it all, and iwas thinking she liked me. i decide to just be friends with her and just look at her like a male friend. so just about everyday after that im over her house and we are talking on the phone till we start talking about exs. so im telling her about a past failed relationship then she just asks me"well why dont you talk to me?" im confused because ididn't think she was thinking like that.
Im like wtf you are gay, but she says gives me the resons she like me. she is really cool and different from a lot of girls plus im still kinda confused about her so i decide for us to take it slow,because starting fast relationships never work out. she is starting college soon and i tell her jokingly if we still are good friends by the time she is done i will marry her. she takes it serious. we agree that we would take it slow and wait. she asks me would i wait till marrage for sex and i say yeah. we even agree that i wont see any other females, she wont see any men. i tell her no females and gets silent for and second and says she might see a female.
i think nothing of it because we are friends and just go on.weeks past and things kinda pick up. first she start introducing me to her family. then she tells them i might be the one she marry and yada yada. when we hang out she shows me all type of wedding dresses and cakes, and as time pass she talk about children and raising a family. so now im thinking she really like me and i start to fall for her. we call each other "baby" and hug, but we never kiss. i kiss her on the cheek but she doesn't kiss me back.
everything is going ok till a week or 2 later when things start to change. we stop hanging out as much as we did before, less talking on the phone and she doesn't really want to go out anywhere with me. by this time ive got to know her really well and i fall in love with her. i realize she is the only girl i want and i cant even imagine my future without her. i cant even imagine sex with another girl but her, and thats a first.
things start changing and im thinking maybe she doesn't like me anymore. actually im quite confused if she likes me or not so one day i just come out and ask her does she still like me as much as i like her and she always say yes. well time goes on and one day i find out she has a girlfriend. not only that , she is in love with her. that makes me wonder things. she doesn't know that i know, and so idecide to ask her questions like ''would she marry a female?'' ''would she raise children with a female?'' and other questions like that, i mean she is and has been in love with females before so its nothing wrong with me wondering those things right?
she answers every question with a mean "No!'' and explains why she wouldn't do that type of stuff. she say she likes girls but doesn't like them like that. me asking those questions seem to bother and irratate her. by this time i really cant tell if she like me at all. its nothing like it was befpre. i decide to ask her if she has a girlfriend when i 100% know she does. every time i ask her she lies.every single time. then she gets mad because she thinks i think she is lieing when she is. now im at this point, me and her agreed on things but how is anything we talked about possible when she is deeply in love a her girlfriend? i mean, i know she is not gonna just drop her for me. if she graduate from college and they are still in love where do i stand?
i go back and ask her those questions again because im so confused about the situation but me askingg seems to make matters worse. she still tells me lies, like she is single and doesn't have sex when i have 100% proof she does. at this point we seem just like mere friends, and it doesn't seem like she me. i keep asking her and tell her to be honest and she says she still like me the same. i decide to test her by just completely cutting her off, and starting an argument with her just to see what shee will do, she always comes around and shows me
she like me enough to not let me go but then it changes.
i dunno,
am i getting played? am i overreacting? why does she blatantly lie to me about her gf? i have proof she has and is in love with her gf, should i wait on her? if i call her right now and ask if she still wants to marry me and everything we agreed on she will say yes, but we almost seem less than friends. and she doesn't show it.
oh also i ttold how deep i feel about her and that i love her just to see what happen and she told me she love me too.

      With her being 19 and you being 25, a 6 year age difference is more pronounced than if she were 29 and you were 35. A 29 year old would be more mature and have more life experience. A 19 year old and a 25 year old are too far apart when it comes to maturity levels. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. However, it's clear that she needs to grow up and figure out if she is gay, straight or bi.
      
      As I said before, it's best to just move on. Take the time to meet and date other women closer to your own age.
