Wow, I just stumbled onto this site the other day to find out what the side effects for the mirena were and was dumbfounded to hear all of what you women have been going through. It was like I had written some of the testimonials myself. I have had the mirena IUD in for over 3 years now and just removed it yesterday. Of course the Dr. dismissed most of what I had to say as being me just needing therapy and actually said I needed to try yoga! Can you believe that? Don't get me wrong, I love yoga, but that's not the point. The point is that there is an overwhelming indication that this device can be a potential life altering and even life threatening product, and that something must be done before more women lose their sanity, health and relationships.
Here are my symptoms:
Physical
-Weight gain of 20 lbs. over a 3 year period and I barely eat anything
-lower back pain and muscle spasms
-upper neck and shoulder pain that has lead to recurrent headaches
-teeth grinding all of the time, go figure
-ovarian pain
-sore breast all of the time, especially around the areola
-non-existent periods, that can't be good for homeostasis or body health balance
-oily hair and skin
Emotional
-always on edge and snap at anything
-constantly nit-picky with boyfriend
-no sex drive whatsoever
-feel rundown all the time
-lack motivation
-easily depressed
-rarely happy with anything
-feel like I am hanging onto sanity by a string
-I always want to be left alone
-anxiety
I'm sure there are more, but that is the gist of the symptoms.
Since the thing was put in I have gotten divorced, quit my job, I have barely any friends anymore since I never feel like doing anything with anyone, my boyfriend now is trying to hang in there, but the lack of intimacy has him at his wits end too.
I hope these side effects ware off sooner rather than later. I have heard 2 months to a year for the body to go back to a normal balance. If anyone else has a friend that is thinking about using this device, please send them to this forum first before it potentially ruins their lives as well.
Please give me some advice if anyone has any about speeding up the healing process.
Thanks for the tips.
I did have a complete fasting blood panel done and everything was normal including my thyroid hormone level, liver enzyme count, and glucose tolerance. I have a B.S. in Nutrition from UC Davis, so I know quite a bit about nutrient imbalances; therefore, I knew poor nutrient intake was not the cause of my problems. I feel that it is too much of a coincidence that these other women on mirena have had similar issues, and it seem to be the only logical explanation for my symptoms. Every symptom I mention in my first posting are post-mirena insertion.
To answer your other questions: my tongue is fine, I have 20/15 vision, I don't have bags under my eyes (well not yet LOL), I have zero stretch marks even from my two pregnancies (I take after my mom), and I have never had spider veins (my sis was the unlucky one in that department).
I know my body just can't handle being on hormones of any kind. The hormone in mirena is a form of progesterone which is know to cause a lot of these symptoms. I was misinformed by my doctor that is should not cause me any problems since it is such a low dose. Anyway, don't get me wrong. I really do appreciate all the help that I can get along with many other women on this forum, and it is helpful to look at all angles. This solidifies my belief that the mirena is the root of my problems. I now know from your questions that I can rule out the most basic and likely causes of these issues that would normally be the cause of so many problems. Through nutrition and exercise, I plan on reversing the effects mirena has had on my body. It won't happen overnight, but at least the thing isn't in my body anymore. I agree with another forum member that when it was removed, it was like my body exhaled. I feel like I have a chance to be normal again.
Just a side not:
I had my period yesterday for the first time in over 3 years. Mirena causes most women to not have a period. It can't be healthy to a woman's body to throw off such an important rhythm like that. Homeostasis is a delicate balance, and I can just imagine what kinds of problems can be the result of fooling with the very core of our womanhood. Well, now I can more than imagine, I know firsthand along with all of you on this forum.
Thanks again and take care.
