Hi Bella, like Dave I'll add my two cents here also - I've also done the
Iodine supplementation about a year ago (worst mistake along with taking Thyroid meds) and my reaction to it sounds like your reactions - over dosing on
Iodine via stimulating adrenals too hard. Especially the dry eye thing, i still get it when my thyroid is playing up - sign your adrenals are struggling!
Though you might not yet get the speeding heart symptoms, the other symptoms sounds like your thyroid is beginning to over act to the stimulation of the
Iodine in the kelp. Emotional sadness has a lot to do with hormones - and the thyroid is a big participant in this. I can tell my thyroid is playing up when i start to become very emotional( i have overactive thyroid but low t4 levels) - outbursts for no reason, skin drying, dry eyes, bowel issues etc. Thyroid can also in turns affect estrogen levels(another precursor to emotional outbursts)and vice versa. And all along your adrenals are also suffering adding to the stress on your hormones. It's all a viscous cycle. If your adrenals are not ready for a more active functioning thyroid, your hormones will begin to go haywire. There's a reason that psychologists now days are beginning to acknowledge thyroid dysfunction as one of the main reasons for depression. But its a shame they've still not caught onto the adrenal component of thyroid function.
This is the reason my practitioner has put taking kelp on hold for me. I know my thyroid needs it but my adrenals are still too weak to take on the extra stimulation from it. I would quit the kelp for a while and concentrate on detox as iodine will be sitting in your liver - it takes a bit of work for the liver to detox itself from the kelp and all the bromide etc that it will displacing along with it . And yes add extra selenium at this stage (just for a while), enough to help the thyroid process all that iodine. Kelp is a strong detoxer also, but it has it's side effects if you have weak thyroid/adrenals as you have just learned and as i did, the hard way, also.
Hope this helps anyway. And like everyone has said, listen to your body, one step at a time. It's a trial and error process anyway. Let us know how you go.
PS - drinking tea, has caffeine and so would be stimulating your adrenals to either catch up with an overactive thyroid or stimulate a sluggish thyroid(just my theory). Reason i need a cup of coffee in the mornings, it's the only thing, at this stage that will wake up my adrenals...lol and gets my bowels moving! I know i be stimulating my adrenals artificially but can't yet help myself.
