Wind Power! 18 y
Wind power is a clean energy alternative to oil, gas, and coal-burning power plants. America may have its first offshore wind power project off of Cape Cod.
Photo from Greenpeace: http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/global-warming-and-energy/copy-of-win...
”We all know by now that fossil fuels contribute to pollution and global warming. So now that we have clean alternatives like wind power, it’s time to flip the switch.
Wind power does not pollute, it is domestically produced and it is renewable. Wind power is the fastest growing source of energy in the world, and its prices are competitive with the cost of electricity from new coal-fired power plants. With additional investment in research and development, the cost of wind pow ... read more

Pelican Poem 18 y
Deena Metzger, poet, visionary, & medicine woman, writes of brown pelicans, an organic farmer, and the profound link between the illnesses of man and the destruction of the environment.
What follows is the poem I read at the American Academy for Environmental Medicine. The subject of the poem owns an organic farm next to the breeding places of the brown pelicans and down wind of the pesticide sprays that undoubtedly did in the pelicans and the man as well. The poem does not state it explicitly, but after being tested negatively for a recurrence of cancer, it was discovered that this friend-farmer-environmentalist is suffering from a disintegrating bone condition that is the same as that pelicans suffer from exposure to pesticides. His wife, also an envir ... read more

The Scheme of the Crop
On ethanol
By Umbra Fisk
31 May 2006
Got questions about the environment? Ask Umbra .
Dear Umbra,
I’m a little amazed by all the bandwagon-jumping going on over E85 ethanol. I wonder if a corn-based fuel can be sustainable over the long term, given the general risks of farming and the disappearance of American farms in the last 20 years. And doesn’t anybody remember the great potato famine and the danger of relying on one crop? Before the unsuspecting public spends zillions of dollars buying into the i ... read more
Joke:The River 18 y
A little goddess/nature humor!
The RIVER
Three men were hiking through a forest when they came upon a large,
raging, violent river.
Needing to get on the other side, the first man prayed, ”God, please
give me the strength to cross the river.”
Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim
across in about 2 hours, having almost drowned before.
After witnessing that, the second man prayed, ”God, please give me
strength and the tools to cross the river.”
Poof! God gave him a rowboat and strong arms and strong legs and he
was able to row across in about an hour after almost capsizing ... read more
Nature Haiku 18 y
Haiku is an ancient Japanese form of poetry traditionally written about nature. Each Haiku has three lines: the first line has 5 beats, or syllables, the second line has 7 beats, and the third line has 5 beats. I tried my hand at it, and found it to be both fun and easy.

Ode to Ants 18 y
What would the world be like if we didn't have ants, and other invertebrates?
An Ode to Ants and Other Invertebrates!
I love bugs! I didn’t always. They used to creep me out. I used to step on them and smash them if I found them in my house. I used to use those ”bug” traps. I haven’t for a long time. My favorite ”bugs” are spiders. Inside the house or out, I enjoy watching them weave their webs. They are a natural predator of ants, and keep this population in my house at bay. I also enjoy the earthworms in my compost pile, and am perpetually astounded by how they help transform food scraps, leaves, and grass clippings into wonderful, nutrient-filled soil, in wh ... read more

Two Eaglets! Webcam Update 18 y
Live eagle webcam of a new nest is up and running! View the eaglets!
May 16, 2006 Update: 10:40 AM PST-- I just witnessed the two eaglets being fed by one of the parents! They are HUGE babies! When I first viewed the live webcam, it looked like an empty abandoned nest; turns out the eaglets snooze under the foliage that covers the nest primarily off-camera, but when Mom or Dad flew in with a feast, they came out of hiding. I’d suggest after going to the site and finding the nest ”quiet” to just minimize the screen but keep the sound on, go about your business or open another window, then when you hear squawks, maximize the screen to see what’s going on ... read more
Eco-Lawn Care 18 y
UPDATED: American lawns generate massive amounts of "green waste", waste water, require tons of herbicides, and cost the average homeowner much money and time. Read about ECO-lawn care!
According to the Audubon Society, the average American lawn generates almost 2 tons of clippings a year, and requires 2½-4 times more water than shrubs or trees. Homeowners use 50% more herbicides than they did 20 years ago, spend 40 hours per week mowing the lawn each year, and spend over $8 billion annually on lawn care products and equipment. Read on for more eco-friendly ways to maintain a lawn!
1) Use an electric or manual push mower to cut your grass. Don’t use conventional gas-powered lawn mowers – they pollute air and contribute to global warming. According to S ... read more
Spring Goddess 18 y
Poem for Spring and Mother's Day--Remember to Honor the Mother Earth this day!
As I kneel to put in the seeds in
careful as stitching, I am in love.
You are the bed we all sleep on.
You are the food we eat, the food
we ate, the food we will become.
We are walking trees rooted in you.
You can live thousands of years
undressing in the spring your black
body, your red body, your brown body
penetrated by the rain. Here
is the goddess unveiled,
the earth opening her strong thighs.
