Save Arctic Refuge!! 19 y
On Monday 12/19/05, the House approved drilling in ANWR, BUT the Senate will vote on the Defense Bill that contains the Arctic Drilling Measure this WEDNESDAY (12/21)! There is a chance the Bill will be filibustered (blocked) by anti-drilling Senators, forcing the Senate to remove the Arctic Drilling measure from the Bill. Read on for more information. TAKE ACTION by contacting your U.S. Senators RIGHT NOW, and asking them to do whatever it takes to get the Arctic Drilling measure OUT of the Defense spending bill, even if it means a filibuster! Thanks for TAKING ACTION!

Winter officially starts December 21, and we are well into cold and flu season. Next time you reach for a Kleenex brand facial tissue to blow your nose....STOP! and honor Greenpeace’s efforts to boycott Kleenex and other Kimberly-Clark products!
Greenpeace is urging consumers to boycott Kimberly-Clark, the largest tissue-products company in the world, makers of Kleenex, Scott, Viva and Cottonelle brand products, because the company is clear-cutting ancient forests in Canada, including the Heart of the Boreal Forest, to produce their paper products. MT. St. Helens, which sits about 30 miles from our house as the crow flies, continues to spew ash, while it is forming a lava dome in the crater and still having minor tremors. Here, in this sunrise shot, she appears to be blowing smoke rings (and anything so benign is welcomed, given recent history.) Picture by Brent and Jan LeBaron What forms the ”smoke rings” is the air flowing over the mountain getting pushed up higher as it goes up and over the top. The moisture content and initial temperature are just right so that the moisture condenses from a vapor to small particles at t ... read more

Saturday marked the 21st anniversary of the Bhopal India disaster, when a deadly gas leak from a pesticide manufacturing plant (Union Carbide, now part of Dow Chemical) killed 15,000 people and poisoned scores more. A photographer uses fluorescent tracer dyes and ultraviolet light to show how pesticides travel
Farmworker, 2002. This image, a composite of about 10 of Tümer’s and Fenske’s photographs, dispels the greatest myth about pesticides: that they stick to what is sprayed. Fenske’s research established that skin is the major pathway of pesticide exposure. In person, the images seen here are merged into one frame, an eerie holograph that animates as viewers move before it.

Liora Leah:
As a scientist and someone whose profession has tangible ties to public health concerns, I strongly object to this campaign.
All medications and pesticides need to be tested, *on humans,* before release to the general public. This ensures that potentially millions of people are not exposed to harmful substances. Test subjects are volunteers, and often have something to gain from allowing themselves to be subjected to the testing.
Releasing untested pesticides and then studying the effects on thousands of people *who have no choice* is the truly unethical pa ... read more

In response to public outcry over testing of pesticides on people, the US Congress is requiring that EPA issue a rule regulating such testing.
