Eco-Action Alert: Tell the Bush Administration that our roadless national forests should stay roadless! Sign a petition affirming your support for our nation's endangered species and critical habitat!
Take Action: Stand up for America’s wild forests: Sign your name! America’s remaining roadless national forests belong to all Americans. But this spring, the Bush administration took a huge step backward by repealing the 2001 "Roadless Rule," opening nearly sixty million acres of America’s last wild National Forests to logging, road construction, mining, oil exploration, and other forms of development. Sign our new petition to tell the administration, once again, that all of our remaining roadless areas should be protected, completely and permanently: &nb ... read more

Volunteers Needed! 19 y
I sent an e-mail out to my physician-friend regarding the use of herbicide at the El Dorado Nature Center. I have posted her response below. She believes that the Center's use of herbicide, without the detergent additive that causes so much environmental devastation, is a step in the right direction, but more community volunteers are needed.
Dr.Dorothy Calabrese, M.D., Environmental Medicine specialist wrote:
Dear Liora:
(The El Dorado Nature Center staff is) on the ball. This (herbicide with active ingredient glyphosate + water, without the "surfactant" or detergent additive) is their generic (cheaper) herbicide equivalent of IPPM (intermittent partial pesticide management) If they let the environment get overgrown, the ecology will shift with adverse consequences.
This is where they should have boy scouts, citizen volunteers, or people
doing court--ordered commuinity service etc come in and ... read more

Herbicide, Round 6! 19 y
Since I wrote the original blog about the El Dorado Nature Center and the use of the herbicide Roundup, I've found out some new information: The herbicide used at the Nature Center does not contain surfactant, the inert "detergent" additive that is known to cause environmental devastation.
Dear All:
This week I spoke with the "grounds coordinator" of the Nature Center, Donnie Haigh, who seems to know a lot more of what is going on than Ken Herbage, the superintendent of maintenance for the entire extensive Long Beach Parks system whom I spoke with last week.
Haigh told me that the Nature Center makes up their own herbicide solution--1 part glyphosate (the active ingredient) to 100 parts water; they don’t have the inert surfactant, or "soap", in it that commercial Roundup has. The surfactant, from what I’ve been reading, is the more t ... read more

Nature Illusion Shattered 19 y
Nature Center Illusion Shattered, or was that Delusion?
I’ve been crying since Friday morning when I found out that the Nature Center I frequent uses Monsanto’s Roundup, a powerful herbicide, to kill weeds along the trail and god-knows-where-else in the park. I know that Roundup is an herbicide used frequently by parks all over the country for just this purpose (it’s even used by the Forestry Service in State and National Parks!), but I always believed, until Friday, that my beloved Nature Center was exempt.
Maybe I wanted to believe this because I live in the suburban wasteland of Southern California, and the Long Beach El Dorado Park N ... read more

I spoke with the Superintendent of Maintenance at the Nature Center where I walk almost daily. He told me that the herbicide they use to kill weeds, Monsanto's Roundup, is "safe enough to drink"!
I contacted the Long Beach Parks, Recreation, and Marine Dept. to file a complaint about the Roundup herbicide used in the Nature Center (see blog ”Broken Hearted”: http://curezone.com/blogs/m.asp?f=309&i=180 and spoke to Ken Herbage, Superintendent of Maintenance. He told me that the Park maintenance employee should not have been using Roundup during hours the park is open to the public, but should have used it only on the day the park is closed, Mondays.
I was incredulous that the Nature Center uses Roundup at all, as the Center has many volunteers that regularly pull weeds and d ... read more

Got back from a walk to the local elementary school around 6:30 this evening. I went there to do my sungazing practice. The school was alive with kids playing baseball, riding bikes, laughing. The sunset through the trees was spectacular. Only one thing to mar the experience. One minor, inconsequential thing. A man, someone’s Daddy, was putting the lines down on the field of grass for tomorrow’s soccer game. He was using paint from an aerosol can. White aerosol paint, loaded into a small line-painting machine that he rolled along the grass. I could see the aerosol spray mist, and smell it ... read more

AB 1229, the Union of Concerned Scientists’ bill requiring global warming emissions labels on all new vehicles sold in California, has been signed by Governor Schwarzenegger and is now law! Now, thanks to our collective efforts, new car buyers will be able to tell right away on the showroom floor which vehicles are the most (or least) friendly toward the environment.
