AB 1229, the Union of Concerned Scientists' bill requiring global warming emissions labels on all new vehicles sold in California, has been signed by Governor Schwarzenegger and is now law! Until now, consumers had virtually no way to measure or compare the global warming pollution impact of their car choices. Now, thanks to our collective efforts, new car buyers will be able to tell right away on the showroom floor which vehicles are the most (or least) friendly toward the environment.
The letters, legislative office visits, and support from UCS activists, scientists and organizational allies were critical to the bill's passage. Thank you for helping create the groundswell of public support that helped this bill succeed!
Sometime next year, the California Air Resources Board will start a rulemaking to decide on the new design of the label. UCS will be involved in that regulatory process to ensure that the label is as informative and consumer-friendly as possible.
Special thanks to Assembly Member Joe Nation (D–Marin County) for authoring the bill, and of course to Governor Schwarzenegger for signing the bill into law.
