Good point, it's a bit like they say of skinny dipping though. It's all a bit different and overwhelming at first so all you think and talk about is skinny dipping itself, but after a while you just relax and enjoy it as if it's the most natural thing in the world- which of course it is. Same as fasting, to start with it's enough to get past our worldy misconceptions and get through it, the focus is almost certainly going to be on the fasting itself more than anything else. For me it was certainly like that. Now that I've done it successfully a few times though I'm not so concerned that I'll 'make it' but more focussed on the whole experience and what lies beyond, just as you say.
Without overdoing the analogies another one is driving a car. When we first learn we have to concentrate on every aspect of driving- watching the road, steering, changing gears, checking mirrors etc etc.. But once we're comfortable with this we don't have to think so hard about the driving and can put more thought into where we are going and what we will be doing when we get there. :)
