You can't make anyone happy, they have to do that themselves. Maybe being happy is something you are born with. I have a dog which I have had since he was born, and he was born happy. The world has alway delighted him, even in his old age he is still happy, even with his aches and pains. All that you have said about women, I could plug in men and that would ring just as true. Nice people are nice people, happy people are happy people, doesn't matter male or female. It seems to me the meaner spouse lives the longest. Maybe you should tell your wife it is not your job to make her happy, she is on her own. Hope that you are able to work this out, seems like a shame to leave a forty year relationship, unless there is no hope and you are makeing each other miserable. Good luck
