Re: Acne's a B*tch: Paleo Diet

I'm only talking about my own experiences, it's fine to disagree. Everyone is different, and therefore different Acne regimens work for different people.

My own experience with the vegetarian diet (and eventually vegan) made my Acne worse, despite the fact that I believed I was doing everything right, eating healthy, pure food. Apparently, legumes have affected me more than most other people. According to the paleo diet:

http://www.healingcrow.com/dietsmain/paleo/paleo.html

"Legumes:
Beans have been touted as the healthy protein alternative to meat. The fact that they can cause gastrointestinal distress should be enough for our concern. Most legumes are poisonous if eaten raw. Legumes are high in lectins, protease inhibitors, and phytates. Lectins are proteins that bind carbohydrates, been identified as being inflammatory and toxic, and have a casual relationship with auto-immune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis , Type I diabetes, and lupus. Phytates or phytic acids, have been shown to inhibit the absorption of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc in the digestive tract. Furthermore, the presence of protease inhibitors interferes with the breakdown of proteins into amino acids. Vegetarians seeking protein from legumes, may actually be making their protein deficiencies worse! A diet high in legumes, at best, will give you gastrointestinal problems and could result in a mineral deficiency. At worst, a diet high in legumes could induce an "auto-immune" response. Furthermore, the soy industry has been pushing the "health benefits" of soy. As a result, most of our processed foods contain a soy additive or byproduct, in effect, lacing our foods with possible toxins."

The paleo diet also discourages potatoes, grains, and processed foods, which many people with Acne may already be limiting.

Maybe some people are better off than others without having to eat meat, but my belief is that I turned myself anemic trying to eat healthy and humane. I've been vegetarian for 6 1/2 years and I can honestly say that I was more alert and physically felt better when I was a meat eater than I did as a vegan, despite taking supplements and doing my best to eat healthy.

There are many different reasons that people become vegetarians, my question is whether vegetarianism is enough for humans to sustain a quality life without meat. Is it doing more harm than good? In my case, yes but I suppose it varies with others. This is merely my opinion, and I've posted it in an effort to perhaps offer help to someone who this could be beneficial to.

There's some good sites here to give you the other side of the argument if your'e interested:
