Acne's a B*tch: Paleo Diet
So I've started getting acne spots since I was a 10 year old girl in grammar school. It got worse in junior high...somewhat better throughout HS and then exploded during college. I'm a 22 year old woman.
I thought that becoming a vegetaran, then a vegan, cutting junk food, taking supplements, etc etc etc would help with my acne. I was on the right track..what you consume does make a difference but I still wasn't getting it right. Basically I read something on the paleo diet that really made me think...and because I was a biology major and well informed on the study of evolution, it was a moment of clarity. Think about it.. as humans... as animals on earth we've evolved eating a certain diet. Think about what we ate before we found fire, when we were npomads wandering from place to place. We never made bread, or cooked potatoes or beans! Basically, if you couldn't eat it uncooked, then you probably shouldn't eat it at all. I always thought that eating beans was good for me, but once I cut beans, that nearly eliminated my acne. I knew I was sensitive to peanuts and cashews..but I didn't realize how close beans were to peanuts..apparently they're all legumes. Basically, we should be eating meat and vegetables and fruits. I had it all backwards. I was vegetarian and ate tons of pasta and beans.
My redness and acne has gone down sooo much since starting this diet. Hopefully Im not just imagining this, but I really feel like this is the first thing that makes sense to me. I'm not saying eat raw meat...just that we should eat food that we've adapted with. Different variations work for different people. Anyone who wants to try the diet should try a strict version..and then slowly introduce foods to see what they're sensitive to.
So..basically, NEVER listen to what your dermatologist says. Acne has everything to do with your diet. Yes, I said it.. and it's true.
Hope this helped someone out there :) I'll keep you guys updated..
