Re: Why do the enlightened get sick?

"Everyone is enlightened, they just don't realize it." That is one of my favorite quotes and I just made it up! I prefer "realization of self" over "enlightenment" I already know I am enlightened I only need to fully realize the essence of self and Who "I" really Am.

Sri Ramana Maharshi is another saint and probably the one most widely recognized by Buddhists, Hindus and other faiths as being realized of course the last 2 years of his life he sufferred from what would seem to be great physical pain, but even towards the end he maintained the same tranquil poise and self same radiant smile. When he was suffering from cancer in the arm a disciple ran away crying because he could not bear to see his master in pain. Ramana only smiled and spoke to a disciple nearby.

“Duraswami is crying because he thinks I am suffering agonies! My body is suffering but I am not suffering. When will he realise that I am not this body?”


When The Masters Sivananda and his blessed disciple Vishnu-Devananda went to Mahahsamadhi they had illnesses but there existed a seperation from these illnesses in the body. They also were said to have felt the flow of prana reversing and gave the dates that they would depart these bodies and did depart on those dates.

My own father suffered with cancer and was told by the doctors many times that he should be in great pain and should take valium or whatever painkillers. He never once winced or cried out in pain and like my grandmother, grandfather and a few others I believe became self-realized at the moment of death you could feel a greater presence in the room when this occurred and there were spontaneous sightings of beings of light at the time of their death which many of us witnessed. Some of us saw the beings of light as actual body forms and they vanished after performing certain actions including speaking , singing and touching the departed. Each of my relatives who died in this manner waited until they had seen or spoken with my children and imparted blessings then left the body, this to say they realized control over the body. With some it is at death with others perhaps before the death.


I just met recently with a senior disciple of Swami Vishnu Devananda who was raised and instructed by him since he was a child. When you meet this man or any of those who remain that had contact with the master or his disciple you can feel the energy and know that the master is still here just not in bodily form. Likewise I know my father is still here just without body.

So it is said that some may stay here and be visible to the eye. I believe they must build a very powerful light body while here and also we must have enough light to see it. We are definitely not this body.
