Was it a type-specific culture that the doctor is doing? It's possible to have HSV1 down there received from someone who has "cold sores" performing oral sex on you. Genital herpes can re-activate from where it goes dormant down a different nerve pathway than the one traveled during the initial infection and can pop up on the buttocks or somewhere in the "boxer shorts" region.
